Canada Cop Watch: Toronto citizens are extremely concerned after a police officer who was cleared of killing two Black men and was accused of beating a third some three decades ago is now the head of the Toronto police’s professional standards unit.

 

The appointment of Supt. Rick Shank was made in the midst of a stay-at-home order during the pandemic two years ago. The professional standards unit is responsible for internal accountability and public confidence in the police.

Although Supt. Richard Shank was appointment to the head of the Professional Standards Unit in October 2021 first went largely unnoticed, it made headlines for the first time recently.

Canada Cop Watch is calling for immediate resignation of Richard Shank. There is no way an officer with his history should be anywhere close to a position that requires making decisions when it comes to police misconduct. He should have been fired and criminally charged. Considering the timeline and the change of process since the original investigations, we are also insisting to reopen the investigations regarding the death of the 2 men as well the 3rd case which Richard Shank was originally cleared of. 

I don’t believe this needs much more explanation. It is wrong and it will completely destroy trust that is already compromised between the community and the Toronto Police Service.
