Why this petition matters

Started by Kate Wilde

Research shows a disproportionate number of LGBTQIA+ people experience poorer mental health outcomes than their peers.  These outcomes are directly related to experiences of stigma, prejudice, discrimination and abuse on the basis of being LGBTQIA+.

Visibility is an important and proven step in increasing the safety of the Queer community, yet there are currently NO visible signs of support or welcome for this community on Council sites in Manningham.  Council services/facilities do not display rainbow flags or stickers, gender neutral toilets are rare and there is little visible information through posters, pamphlets, etc.

All adjacent Local Government Areas (Nillumbik, Banyule, Maroondah, Yarra Ranges, Whitehorse, Boroondara) have symbols of safety and acceptance clearly displayed at libraries, sports facilities, Council offices, etc. whereas Manningham has none.

We petition Council to demonstrate its commitment to providing inclusive services through the display of rainbow stickers at Council Services and facilities.  This is a small step that can have a huge impact on LGBTQIA+ residents of all ages feeling safe in Manningham.
