We call on the boards of directors of five private French banks - Crédit Agricole, Groupe BPCE, BNP Paribas, Banque Postale, Société Générale - and one public fund - Fonds de Réserve pour les Retraites, to end their investments in companies linked to the Myanmar military cartel. More than two years after the attempted military coup of February 1, 2021, the junta is continuing to wage war against the people. The toll of this terror campaign is heavy: over 3,463 dead, 17,797 political prisoners, at least 600 air strikes against civilians and over 1.5 million displaced civilians. 

The survey "Investing in Myanmar’s military cartel: What is your bank financing?" carried out by Info Birmanie, BankTrack and Justice For Myanmar, with the support of Altsean-Burma, Reporters without Borders and International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), reveals that these French banks and the public fund have invested $6 billion in 22 companies directly or indirectly supporting the Myanmar military junta. More than 75% of these investments are linked to fossil fuels. Crédit Agricole accounts for $4 billion of these investments, notably in arms and dual-use technology companies, as well as in the junta-linked telecommunications sector that is complicit in mass surveillance. 

As shareholders in the 22 companies in question, the French financial groups under investigation are indirectly investing in the atrocities committed by the Myanmar military, and their investees are providing the junta with the economic resources it needs to buy weapons and aviation fuel for its campaign of terror.

Despite US, EU and UK sanctions, the players in the military cartel are indirectly financed by the money of French savers.

In view of the war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated by the junta with impunity, it is the responsibility of the financial groups concerned to exercise increased vigilance over their investments and to divest responsibly, as quickly as possible. 

Not one euro of French investment should benefit the Myanmar military junta!
