Why this petition matters

Started by Kyron Brahmbhatt

My name is Kyron. Until recently, I was a 39-year old private renter in London. Please support my petition so that no one else has to go through the ordeal that I have, ever again.

In June 2021 we moved into a new property. I was so pleased my partner and I had a place of our own to call home. But soon my life would become a complete misery as I became exposed to the very worst of England’s broken renting system.

Five weeks after we moved in, our property flooded because of heavy rain and a problem at the local pumping station. The water was about a foot deep throughout our one bedroom basement flat. It was horrible.

Initially, the landlord was happy to help fix the situation. But then he refused to pay up, cancelled the repairs and threatened to evict us. Our home was never repaired, and it turned damp and mouldy.

A year of back-and-forth about the repairs and living in squalor had a huge effect on my well-being. The hardest thing was trying to shield my family and my partner from the stress of it all.

To cap it all off, the landlord tried to evict us again using a Section 21 “no fault” eviction. He was unsuccessful but we have finally been forced to vacate after months of constant stress and underhanded tactics by our landlord to try and get us out.

All I wanted was my home to be safe and secure – is that really so much to ask?

It is absurd that landlords still have the power called “no fault” evictions which let them evict tenants without having to give any reason for doing so, with just two months' notice. They can wield their power over you to prevent you from asking for the bare minimum.

The Government knows it’s wrong - they promised to abolish no-fault evictions in 2019. But they still haven’t. So please sign my petition to demand the Government urgently passes a new law called the “Renters Reform Bill”. Renters like me deserve a secure, safe, affordable (and dry!) place to call home.

I’m going to take my petition to 10 Downing Street on 21st March - so add your name now!
