Marriage Equality for the Navajo Nation
Marriage Equality for the Navajo Nation
Why this petition matters
The 25th Navajo Nation Council is considering the repeal of the Diné Marriage Act of 2005, a discriminatory law that bans same-sex marriage in the Navajo Nation. With the leadership of former Speaker and Council Delegate Seth Damon, Legislation #0139-23 was reintroduced to recognize marriage equality among the Navajo people and to protect the rights of our Navajo women.
This bill will expand protections for same-sex couples, recognize current marriage licenses, ensure equal benefits for all, and update Title 9 to ensure Navajo women have equal rights as men.
Your support will send a message to President Buu Nygren, Vice President Richelle Montoya, Speaker Crystalyne Curley, and the 25th Navajo Nation Council that we are an inclusive Sovereign Nation and we accept all our gay, lesbian, bisexual, two-spirit, and transgender family member.
