Why this petition matters

The annexation of Miami Springs is simply not American. It is against the will of the people in the area about to be annexed.  Property owners being affected and being taxed don't have the right to vote and their future is now in the hands of the Miami-Dade Commissioners.

Property taxes on the area are set to increase to more than triple, a 6.99% millage rate as opposed to the current unincorporated millage rate of 1.9%. No commitment to additional services is being proposed to justify this increase. At the moment, there is no binding commitment from Miami Springs to continue lowering the millage rate to reasonable rates like our neighbor Doral, which has one of the lowest property tax rates in Miami.

In an economy that is experiencing rising raw material costs, labor rates, and staggering inflation, it is simply not logical to heavily burden these business owners with high property tax rates, when those funds are essential to continue growing and investing in their communities. Some business owners stand to pay upwards of $ 200,000 in additional tax payments year after year.

The results could be detrimental to small to medium-sized businesses in the area by slowing down their growth and economic impact, or worse, shutting them down completely.

Furthermore, the geography is not adjacent. This unincorporated area is only connected by a railroad crossing on the back road along the Miami River, affecting the quality of the services that can be rendered from such a distance.

Join this petition to support our cause and help these small to medium size businesses, that employ thousands in the area, continue investing in their people and the economy of Miami Dade.

Reform needs to happen for the process of annexation to take place. Simply put- those who are in the area to be annexed need a vote. City leaders need to be held accountable for their actions, especially to those that are footing the bill.
