Why this petition matters

Started by Arely Vazquez

PNG high school has their mascot as “The Indians”, in which they portray them as any other ignorant person would. They wear headdresses, their mascot holds a bow and arrow, their dancers are called “indianettes”. Many people who derive from that culture or have family wish for a change to happen, but alas the mascot remains the same. Not enough people see a problem with this, everyone who thinks it’s fine stating, “oh it’s their mascot, stop overreacting” or “people like you think everything is racist/cultural appropriation”, but they’re not people who come from that culture. Most aren’t even POC who decide that it’s fine. Since when is it fine to push aside people who are actually from that cultures feelings? They have a phrase at PNG where they say, “scalp em Indians! scalp em!” which is wrong on so many levels. Many Natives back then used that symbol as a religious and military symbol, and the school is just using it as a way to state how they’ll beat the opposing school. We need to change the way this school perceives Natives because instead of playing homage to them, they’re insulting them.
