We, the participants of the Democracy Moves 2023 Annual Conference, reaffirm our commitment to advancing democracy, human rights and social justice around the world. We firmly believe that a better world is possible and that fairer and more participatory democracies can be achieved. We recognize the power of youth to create positive changes in their communities and countries, and we are committed to supporting and empowering their leadership. Therefore, we endorse the following 10 fundamental principles and commitments, and we call on governments, organizations and individuals to join us in supporting these principles:

1. Strengthen Youth Activism: We will strive to increase national, regional, and international cooperation between youth activists and organizations focused on creating more democratic countries and communities. We know that by fostering collaboration and sharing proven methods, we aim to amplify the impact of youth-led initiatives around the world.
2. Strengthen Democratic Institutions: We recognize the importance of strong and accountable democratic institutions in safeguarding democracy. We commit to supporting efforts to strengthen the institutional capacity and impact of organizations and activists working to create more democratic countries and communities.
3. Provide access to meaningful and relevant civic education and opportunities: We advocate for increased access to quality and relevant civic education and meaningful opportunities for youth to participate in democratic processes. We believe that equipping youth with the knowledge, skills and resources necessary for active citizenship will strengthen democracy and lead to more inclusive societies.
4. Promote the opening of civic spaces: Recognizing the importance of civic spaces as platforms for expression, dialogue and activism, we emphasize the need to protect and expand these spaces. We pledge to uphold the rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and association, and to oppose any attempt to restrict or silence civic voices.
5. Protect Media Freedom: We stress the importance of a free and independent media that can operate without undue interference or censorship. We are committed to advocating for the protection of the rights of journalists and working to create an enabling environment in which media professionals can carry out their duties without fear of reprisals, harassment or arbitrary detention, simply for reporting freely.
6. Harnessing technology for political engagement: We recognize the crucial role of youth in advancing both democracy and sustainable development. We commit to exploring the potential of technology to enhance youth political participation, harness digital tools for civic engagement, and promote inclusive and accessible democratic processes.
7. Research and Knowledge Sharing: We recognize the value of research and knowledge sharing in advancing democratic practices. We commit to fostering collaboration among activists, university researchers studying democracy education, and civil society organizations to improve our understanding of democracy education, civil society strategies, and effective advocacy techniques.
8. Expanding Women's Leadership: We stress the importance of women's political participation and leadership in democratic governance. We advocate for greater representation of women in political structures and institutions, while recognizing that women's leadership goes beyond these realms. We commit to supporting initiatives that empower and elevate the voice of women to drive political change and promote equity and justice.
9. Showcase the impact of youth: We celebrate the inspiring initiatives led by young people from around the world who are influencing democratic spaces. We are committed to highlighting and learning from these powerful case studies, amplifying their stories and providing platforms for youth to share their experiences and insights.
10. Collaborate in Solidarity: We recognize the power of collective action and collaboration to achieve our shared vision. We commit to strengthen global cooperation between youth activists and organizations working for democratic change for a better future.
