We, the undersigned, are deeply saddened and outraged by the Delaware State Fair’s sudden announcement of the permanent closure of the Centre Ice Rink, effective May 2025. Without prior notice to impacted organizations or any genuine attempt at dialogue, this decision will devastate Southern Delaware’s access to ice programs, as there are no alternative facilities within a 75-minute drive. This closure marks the end of a cherished community hub that has fostered the growth and development of over 200 youth and adults alike through hockey, figure skating, and other ice sports programs.

The Centre Ice Rink has been more than just a building; it has been a vital part of our community, hosting youth leagues, scholastic teams, adult recreational groups, and even programs for veterans. It is a space where children have learned teamwork, discipline, and resilience while pursuing their dreams. Despite its undeniable impact on the community, the Delaware State Fair board has chosen financial gain over social responsibility, opting to convert the rink into a more "profitable" event space.

This decision is not only shortsighted but also goes against the stated mission of the Delaware State Fair as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which is meant to prioritize community impact over profit. The lack of transparency surrounding this process is deeply troubling. Following a two-hour meeting with impacted organizations, where we expressed willingness to fundraise or assist with repairs, we were informed by Danny Aguilar, General Manager of the State Fair, that 56 of 82 board members had already decided to close the rink. No negotiations were held, and no notice of the vote or decision was provided until it was final.

When questioned about the economic impact on local businesses and the devastating effect this closure will have on families across the Delmarva region, we were told that no consideration was given. Despite claiming to be a community-oriented organization, the board has clearly prioritized financial interests over the well-being of the very community it purports to serve.

This closure is not just a loss for ice sports enthusiasts; it is a loss for our children, our veterans, and our community as a whole. The Centre Ice Rink represents dreams, growth, and opportunities for people of all ages, and its removal highlights a troubling shift in values where money speaks louder than the future of our youth.

We call on the Delaware State Fair Board to reverse this decision immediately and engage in transparent discussions with the community to explore alternative solutions. Together, we can find a way to preserve this essential resource and ensure it continues to serve the people of Southern Delaware and beyond.
