MOVEMENT FOR CITIZENSHIP FOR ALL - LETTER REGARDING SENATE PARLIAMENTARIAN AND THE BUDGET RECONCILIATION PROPOSAL

The Movement for Citizenship for All (“Movimiento de Papeles Para Todos”)—a movement led by and for undocumented immigrants—urgently writes the below letter to the Biden administration and top Democrats in Congress demanding (1) that they override the Senate parliamentarian’s unbinding decision to exclude undocumented immigrants from the budget reconciliation package and (2) that the Democratic Party stop excluding and criminalizing millions in our community from a pathway to citizenship, as the proposal before the House of Representatives currently does.

As the Biden administration rounds up Haitian migrants in an open display of White Supremacy, we stand with Haitian refugees and call on the immigrant rights’ movement to stand united and independently of the Democratic Party to win legal protections for all, not just a few. We cannot allow the Democratic Party to hide behind an unelected parliamentarian to wash its hands clean of our demand for citizenship for all. We cannot wait another 20 years of failed promises! We cannot accept the Democratic Party’s proposal in the House of Representatives that excludes and criminalizes over 3 million people from a path to citizenship. The Democrats' proposal to exclude predominantly female industries from the definition of essential occupations, domestic workers, those unemployed due to the pandemic, the disabled and elderly who are unable to work, and to further expand criminal bars without regard to how old an offense is or whether the person has been rehabilitated will disproportionately impact the most marginalized in our community, namely Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQI migrants. This is cruel and unacceptable.

We thus urge all immigrant rights’ organizations, social and racial justice organizations, and individuals to join the Movement for Citizenship for All and endorse this letter to President Biden and top Democrats in Congress to demand a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the country. Override the parliamentarian! Eliminate the filibuster! Legalization for all, now!
