Innovarte ONG (Chile) AIS (Perú) y otras organizaciones sin fines lucro, solicitamos a Pfizer que suspenda el monopolio sobre el  medicamento  PAXLOVID y permita la distribución de genéricos en toda Latinoamérica.

Este tratamiento reduce en un 85% el riesgo de hospitalizaciones en adultos mayores y ayuda a combatir el Covid Persistente. Sin embargo no está disponible, a menos que se importe pagando cientos de dólares. 

En abril, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) recomendó el uso de PAXLOVID™ en pacientes que corran un riesgo elevado de ingreso hospitalario; y lo describió como la mejor opción terapéutica hasta la fecha para población de riesgo y adultos mayores. 

La emergencia sanitaria hace urgente el acceso acelerado a Paxlovid, en cantidad y condiciones adecuadas. Por ello, Pfizer debe incluir, por razones éticas y de Salud Pública, a  todos  los países de Latinoamérica dentro de los autorizados para  acceder a los genéricos fabricados en países vecinos.

Recordemos que la Pandemia no finaliza si no se controla en todo el mundo y que todavía estamos lejos de una distribución solidaria de todas las herramientas disponibles para combatirla.  La presente carta emplaza positivamente a Pfizer a  incluir a todos los países latinoamericanos dentro de los autorizados para  comprar tratamientos genéricos de Paxlovid, y así evitar hospitalizaciones y muertes  por culpa del monopolio.

WE REQUEST PFIZER TO STOP ITS COVID19 TREATMENT MONOPOLY.

Considering the increase of cases of COVID-19 as a result of the emergence of new variants that resist vaccine immunity, NGO INNOVARTE and the undersigned, request Pfizer to stop its monopoly on the drug PAXLOVID (combination of nirmatrelvir and ritonavir) and to allow the distribution of generic drugs in Chile, Peru and throughout Latin America.

In April, the World Health Organization (WHO) made a strong recommendation in favor of the use of PAXLOVID™ for patients with mild and moderate cases of COVID-19 who are at high risk of hospital admission; and labeled it as the best therapeutic option to date in high-risk patients.  

Pfizer has authorized (in exchange for payment) generic manufacturers in Brazil, Mexico and the Dominican Republic to produce this drug, but paradoxically does not allow them to distribute it in their own countries or export it to Chile, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, among other Latin American countries, limiting its availability and forcing its acquisition at unacceptable monopolistic prices and conditions.

The health emergency makes urgent the accelerated access to Paxlovid, in adequate quantity and conditions. Therefore, for ethical and public health reasons, Pfizer should include all Latin American countries among those authorized to have access to generics (nirmatrelvir and ritonavir) manufactured in neighboring countries.

We must not forget that the Pandemic will not end if it is not controlled worldwide and that we are still far from a solidary distribution of all the tools available to do so.  This letter positively urges Pfizer to include all Latin American countries among those authorized to purchase generic Paxlovid treatments, and thus avoid hospitalizations and deaths due to its monopoly.
