While traveling in Mexico, I found myself in a situation where I was held against my will in terrible conditions. The owners of what is supposed to be a place of recovery kept me and others locked in a bedroom of multiple bunk beds for sometimes over twenty hours in a day. They had locks placed on the outside of the doors and chains on the front gate that were in place to keep us from accessing freedom. There were only two toilets in the room. Lack of plumbing and water from the staff to flush the toilets meant we had to sit in each other's excretions as well as smell them throughout the day/night. There were no sinks to wash our hands and provisions weren't made otherwise. We were allowed to 'shower' every few days and this consisted of a bucket filled with water. While locked up in the bedroom, we weren't given enough drinking water and were forced to share one drinking cup. Our diet consisted of mostly beans and fried tortilla chips. I was kept from contacting family and I witnessed others being treated the same. I have reached out to the Embassy and am in the process of pursuing justice for not only myself, but for the women who are still living in these conditions but I am unable to do this alone as I am recovering physically and emotionally.
