Why this petition matters

Started by Carel van Niekerk

Every time, we walk or cycle next to the Coolafinny road (B118) towards or from Broadridge Primary school, we fear for the safety of our children due to vehicles (cars, buses large trucks and even tractors) coming in and out of the village. These drivers are not breaking the rules, but simply driving up to the speed limit of 60mph right next to where our children walk, cycle, scoot to and from school every day.

The Highway Code (Rule 126) demonstrates the total stopping distance for a normal vehicle travelling at 60mph is 73 meters. This means if a child falls off their bike or trips onto the road there is absolutely no chance a driver will have enough time to stop their vehicle to avoid an accident.

The speed limit needs to be permanently reduced from 60mph to 30mph on the Coolafinny road all the way from the roundabout on the A2 into Eglinton village and visa versa to help keep our children safe and our stress levels down. I would also recommend that this is further reduced to a temporary 20mph speed limit during school travel times which we have seen in other areas.

We also urgently need a pedestrian crossing at the Eglinton Play Park in the village. Vehicles often speed through the narrow crossing area and do not stop for pedestrians of which most are young children, putting them at risk. This is also where a lot of children are crossing the road on their way to or from school.

Reducing the speed limit and implementing a pedestrian crossing at the park will keep our children much safer in our village.

Please sign and share this petition to get the attention of the local council to make these changes.
