The Audi A2 1.2 TDi (commonly referred to as the 3L model) was manufactured by Audi from 2001 to 2005. To this day, it is the most fuel efficient mainstream non hybrid production vehicle ever made.
(Source: The most fuel efficient vehicles).
It often averages consumption around or below 2.8l/100km (84 US MPG) and rarely exceeds 3.5 l/100km (67 US MPG) in extreme conditions.

These exceptional figures were achieved by optimizing every aspect of the car. One essential element were the 145 80 R 14 tyres. As quoted in Audi world:

Special size 145/80 R 14 tyres of a new design not only reduce rolling resistance on the A2 1.2 TDI; they also bring aerodynamic advantages. They are narrower than the standard tyres on the other A2 models, and are aerodynamically optimized by additional fine grooves incorporated into their sidewalls. The wheel arches are narrower, to match the dimension of the tyres; this measure likewise reduces drag.

Summer tyres are manufactured by Bridgestone and are still available. Winter tyres were produced by Continental (Contiwinter) but have been out of production for the last few years.

This has forced A2 1.2 TDI winter drivers to compromise on tyre size, thus going away from the car original design and increasing fuel consumption. In some circumstances, they had to upsize the wheels to 15’’, abandoning the 14’’ magnesium wheels which are a key feature of this model.

According to the Facebook support group, there are still around 2500 A2 1.2 TDIs on the road.

As Continental partnered with Audi 25 years ago in order to produce the most fuel efficient vehicle of its time, we believe it has now the duty to keep supplying original tyres to the remaining A2 3 L community. We understand that producing these tyres must not be economically profitable but it is aligned with Continental sustainability policy and would be a good opportunity to prioritize environmental issues over economical ones.

Our ambition is to become the most progressive tire manufacturer in terms of environmental and social responsibility. We take responsibility for our products, people and the environment. Tomorrow's mobility will be cleaner, more sustainable and carbon neutral. On this journey, we are pioneers.

Thus, we are hereby asking Continental to relaunch the production of Continental 145 80 R14 ContiWinter tyres in order to help keeping the remaining A2 1.2 TDI cars on the road with the least environmental impact as it was designed to be.
