Why this petition matters

To the Honourable the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, in Legislature Assembled:

The petition of the undersigned citizens of the Province of British Columbia, states that:

We oppose the language of Ministerial Order M488, which allows for open-air illicit drug use and trafficking to run rampant on our cities' streets. This ministerial order has created a legal no-mans' land for drug traffickers of highly addictive, extremely dangerous street drugs and for 'non-profit' organizations to reap windfalls of public money doled out with implied organizational incentives for the crisis to continue, with no end in sight.

We believe M488 has outlived its relevance, and needs to be replaced. We believe that it is now doing more harm than the good it was originally intended to yield. It is now standing in the way of meaningful progress on de-escalating the crisis through drug use prevention, detox, treatment, recovery, trauma care, and reasonable law enforcement.

We have stood by and watched on for many years, bewildered by the urban decay and mounting societal impacts that we entrusted our public officials to understand and respond effectively to. The trauma inflicted on all of society by this crisis continues to manifest destructive forces in our civilization, and are now entrenched in North American culture and counterculture, including the entirety of this Province.

We will no longer sit idly by as our families’ and our homes’ safety and security are under assault by the resultant social disorder.

Your petitioners respectfully request that the Honourable House repeal and replace Ministerial Order M488 immediately, such that it includes mitigation for the limitless and unlawful abuse of the public purse and public safety that British Columbian's are currently detrimentally impacted by.

Dated 22nd day of December, 2022.

Sincerely,

Collen Middleton

Interim Chair, Nanaimo Area Public Safety Association
