Pachia Ammos beach, Stavros, is one of the rare clean and untouched beaches on the north side of Chania, Crete. This beautiful natural haven is not only a much-loved public beach, open to all, but it is also a nesting ground for the endangered Caretta caretta sea turtle or loggerhead turtle. Every year, more and more eggs are found and protected on this beach. In the sand, white sea lilies Pancratium maritinum grow, another endangered species. At the north end, there is an archeological site with an ancient quarry and a petrified forest where rare rhizomes were recently discovered.

Now, the municipality of Chania has decided to build a sewage pumping station right on this beach (at point A44) with a surface of 150 sq.m and depth of min. 6 m. 

This is a serious threat with huge ecological consequences for the sea turtles and for other marine and plant life. And of course for the people who live in Stavros and all who come to enjoy its natural beauty!

In case of technical difficulties or power cuts, of which there are many, sewage will end up on the beach, destroying the animal and plant life. The sewage plant will emit a nasty smell. And it will no longer be a safe spot for the many families who now enjoy the sandy beach and clear water. The plant will also block the walking trail to the archeological zone, an area of public interest. 

The Environmental Impact Study (EIA) that should be done before such a project has never been shown to the residents of the area and cannot be found. 

In 1973, the area of Stavros was characterized as a landscape of exceptional natural beauty, which needs special state protection (Government Gazette 1242 / B / 1973), while the Ecological Initiative of Chania submitted a request for the area of Stavros to receive candidate status for inclusion in the Natura 2000 Network.

Furthermore, the residents of Stavros were never informed or consulted about this project. This is contrary to the Greek legislation of Art. 86 law 3852/2010, and to E.U. laws on information and consultation with the right to exchange views or even objections by institutions and citizens. According to Article 24 of the Constitution, the protection of the natural and cultural environment is an obligation of the State and a right of everyone. 

The residents and friends of Pachia Ammos believe in the need for a new sewage pump in the area. But they think that this is not the right location. It will destroy a sensitive area of ecological, cultural and social importance.

SAVE PACHIA AMMOS BEACH - Σπίτι της θαλάσσιας χελώνας

 

 

Η παραλία Παχιά Άμμος στον Σταυρό Ακρωτηρίου, είναι μια από τις σπάνιες καθαρές και ανέγγιχτες παραλίες στη βόρεια πλευρά των Χανίων. Αυτό το πανέμορφο φυσικό καταφύγιο δεν είναι μόνο μια πολύ αγαπημένη δημόσια παραλία, ανοιχτή σε όλους, αλλά αποτελεί επίσης περιοχή ωοτοκίας για την απειλούμενη με εξαφάνιση θαλάσσια χελώνα
καρέτα-καρέτα. Κάθε χρόνο, όλο και περισσότερα αυγά βρίσκονται και προστατεύονται σε αυτή την παραλία. Στην άμμο, φυτρώνουν λευκά θαλάσσια κρίνα Pancratium maritinum, ένα άλλο είδος που απειλείται. Στο βόρειο άκρο, υπάρχει ένας αρχαιολογικός χώρος με ένα αρχαίο λατομείο και ένα απολιθωμένο δάσος όπου ανακαλύφθηκαν πρόσφατα σπάνια
ριζώματα.

Ο δήμος Χανίων έχει αποφασίσει να κατασκευάσει ένα αντλιοστάσιο λυμάτων ακριβώς σε αυτή την παραλία (στο σημείο Α44) με επιφάνεια 150 τ.μ. και βάθος τουλάχιστον 6 μ.

Πρόκειται για μια σοβαρή απειλή με τεράστιες οικολογικές συνέπειες για τις θαλάσσιες χελώνες και την υπόλοιπη θαλάσσια και φυτική ζωή. Και φυσικά για τους κατοίκους του Σταυρού και για τους επισκέπτες που έρχονται να απολαύσουν τη φυσική ομορφιά του!

Σε περιπτώσεις ημερών με τεχνικές δυσκολίες ή διακοπών ρεύματος -όπου υπάρχουν πολλές- τα λύματα θα καταλήγουν στην παραλία, καταστρέφοντας τη ζωική και φυτική ζωή. Το αντλιοστάσιο λυμάτων θα αναδίδει μια δυσάρεστη οσμή και δεν θα είναι πλέον ένα ασφαλές σημείο για τους πολλούς ανθρώπους που απολαμβάνουν τώρα την αμμώδη
παραλία και τα καθαρά νερά. Το αντλιοστάσιο θα μπλοκάρει επίσης το μονοπάτι περιπάτου προς την αρχαιολογική ζώνη, μια περιοχή δημόσιου ενδιαφέροντος.

                                                                                                                          
Η Μελέτη Περιβαλλοντικών Επιπτώσεων (ΜΠΕ) που θα έπρεπε να γίνει πριν από ένα τέτοιο έργο, δεν έχει παρουσιαστεί ποτέ στους κατοίκους της περιοχής και δεν μπορεί να βρεθεί. Το 1973 η περιοχή του Σταυρού χαρακτηρίστηκε ως τοπίο εξαιρετικού φυσικού κάλλους, το οποίο χρήζει ειδικής κρατικής προστασίας (ΦΕΚ 1242/Β/1973), ενώ η Οικολογική
Πρωτοβουλία Χανίων έχει υποβάλει αίτημα για να λάβει η περιοχή του Σταυρού το καθεστώς υποψήφιας για ένταξη στο Δίκτυο Natura 2000.
Επιπλέον, οι κάτοικοι του Σταυρού ουδέποτε ενημερώθηκαν ή ζητήθηκε η γνώμη τους για το εν λόγω έργο.

Αυτό έρχεται σε αντίθεση με την ελληνική νομοθεσία του άρθρου 1 του ν. 86 του ν. 3852/2010, καθώς και με τη νομοθεσία της Ε.Ε. περί ενημέρωσης και διαβούλευσης με δικαίωμα ανταλλαγής απόψεων ή και αντιρρήσεων από φορείς και πολίτες. Σύμφωνα με το άρθρο 24 του Συντάγματος, η προστασία του φυσικού και πολιτιστικού περιβάλλοντος αποτελεί υποχρέωση της Πολιτείας και δικαίωμα του καθενός.

Οι κάτοικοι και οι φίλοι της παραλίας Παχιά Άμμος στον Σταυρό, πιστεύουν στην ανάγκη ύπαρξης μονάδας επεξεργασίας λυμάτων στην περιοχή. Πιστεύουν όμως ότι δεν είναι η κατάλληλη θέση για το αντλιοστάσιο του Α44. Θα καταστρέψει μια ευαίσθητη περιοχή
οικολογικής, πολιτιστικής και κοινωνικής σημασίας.
