Why this petition matters

Protecting sharks and their habitat is crucial for the long-term health of the marine ecosystem in the Mexican Caribbean. By conserving sharks, we can help protect the many other species that depend on them and maintain a healthy ocean for future generations.

Sharks play a critical role in maintaining the ecological balance of the marine ecosystem. They are top predators and help control the populations of other marine species, preventing overgrazing and allowing other species to thrive.

But sharks around Isla Mujeres face a grave threat -- for generations they have been seen only as a fishing resource.

Help us protect sharks by ensuring fishers' livelihoods sustainably. Advocate for the recognition of sharks' true value as an ecological and recreational resource of value under Mexican law. This will enable the promotion of non extractive productive activities and ecotourism activities in conservation reserves, such as diving with sharks, so fishers can transition into shark conservationists and sustainable tourism guides, as an economic alternative to fishing sharks.

Together we can demystify sharks, stop reproducing stereotypes of them as dangerous, this gets them killed and reduces the already vulnerable shark populations worldwide according to the IUCN and instead lets promote their true ecological and intrinsic value and the conservation of this key species.

Sign this petition to protect sharks and recognize their value for our oceans' health and for livelihoods.
