私には夢があります。（中略）小さな黒人の男の子と女の子が、小さな白人の男の子と女の子と手を取り合い、兄弟姉妹として過ごせるようになる、という夢です（マーティン・ルーサー・キング・ジュニア＝キング牧師）。

私にも、クラシック音楽の分野において、現代音楽とそれ以外の音楽が共存し、ともに賞を競うようになるという夢があります。

【芥川作曲賞とは】
芥川作曲賞（あくたがわさっきょくしょう）は、作曲家芥川也寸志の功績を記念して、サントリー音楽財団が1990年4月に創設した賞。前年度に初演された日本の新進作曲家の作品のうち、最も「清新かつ将来性に富む」ものを対象に贈られる。2019年の第29回より正式名称が芥川也寸志サントリー作曲賞と変更された。

この賞の特徴のひとつに「公開選考」を行う点がある。最終選考は毎年8月下旬にサントリーホールで行われる。候補作品を演奏会形式で紹介した後、ステージ上で3人の選考委員による公開討論が行われ、受賞作品が決まる（Wikipediaより）。

【私の考えとお願い】
私は芥川作曲賞の選考演奏会を2回ほど聴いたことがあります。そこで聴いたのは、例外なく「現代音楽」（※無調と不協和音を特徴とする）でした。それ以外の音楽がノミネートされることはないように思います。その他、日本を代表する作曲賞（武満徹作曲賞、日本音楽コンクールなど）でも、受賞者はほぼ全て現代音楽です。

※「現代音楽」と「それ以外の音楽」の定義はそれほど明確ではな　　いかもしれません。しかしながら、対立軸をつくっておかないと私の主張がにぶってしまうので、このように書いておきます。

これらの事実から見て取れるように、「芥川作曲賞」や他の主要な音楽賞では、現代音楽以外で活動している有望な若手作曲家たちがフェアに評価されていません。その原因として、「選考委員が現代音楽の支持者である」ことが挙げられます。

たとえば、日本の美術界では――公募展についていえば――さまざまな作風、様式が認められており、特定の特徴を持った作品が排除されることはありません。ひるがえって日本の音楽界を見るに、そうした公平・公正さを見つけることはできません。
 
美術評論家であり哲学者のアーサー・ダントーは、「何が芸術か決めているのは芸術家、評論家、学者、ジャーナリスト、 美術館の学芸員 たちだ」と述べました。これは美術の世界について語られた言葉ですが、現在の音楽界はどうでしょうか――作曲賞を選考しているも一部の人たちです。

「芥川也寸志サントリー作曲賞」（通称：芥川作曲賞）は日本でもっとも影響力ある作曲賞の一つです。その影響力を活用し、選考委員の多様性を求めることで、現代音楽以外の作曲家たちにも公平な評価が行われるようにしたいと思います。私たちはこの状況を改善するために行動します。

具体的には、選考委員3名のうち少なくとも1名は現代音楽以外の作曲家であるべきだと提案します。これにより、多様な音楽ジャンルが公平に評価される機会が生まれます。

私たちはこの変化を求めて署名活動を開始します。芥川作曲賞の選考委員人選の多様化を求めてください。

【What is the Akutagawa Composition Award?】

The Akutagawa Composition Award was established in April 1990 by the Suntory Music Foundation to commemorate the achievements of composer Yasushi Akutagawa. It is awarded to the most "fresh and promising" work among those emerging Japanese composers that premiered in the previous year. From the 29th award in 2019, its official name was changed to the Yasushi Akutagawa Suntory Composition Award.

One unique feature of this award is its "public selection" process. The final selection takes place every year in late August at Suntory Hall. After introducing the nominated works in a concert format, a public discussion is held on stage by three jury members, and the winning work is decided (The above text, sourced from Wikipedia).

【My Thoughts and Wish】
I have attended the Yasushi Akutagawa Suntory Award for Music Composition selection concerts twice. The music I heard there was, without exception, 'contemporary music' (※characterized by atonality and dissonance). It seems that no other types of music are nominated. Similarly, in other prestigious Japanese composition awards (such as the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award, Japan Music Competition, etc.), almost all the winners are contemporary music composers.

※"Definitions of 'contemporary music' and 'other types of music' may not be very clear. However, I need to establish a contrast to sharpen my argument, so I will write it this way."

As can be seen from these facts, promising young composers who work in genres other than contemporary music are not being fairly evaluated in the "Yasushi Akutagawa Suntory Award for Music Composition" or other major music awards. One reason for this could be that "the jury members are supporters of contemporary music."

In the world of Japanese art, particularly in the context of public exhibitions, various styles and approaches are accepted, and works with specific characteristics are not excluded. On the other hand, when we look at the world of Japanese music, we do not find such fairness and impartiality.

Arthur Danto, an art critic and philosopher, stated, 'What defines art is decided by artists, critics, scholars, journalists, and curators of museums.' This statement was made about the world of art, but what about the current music scene? There, the selection of composition awards is also in the hands of a select few."

 The " Yasushi Akutagawa Suntory Award for Music Composition is one of Japan's most influential composition awards. We want to use this influence to demand diversity in the jury, ensuring fair evaluation for composers of genres other than contemporary music. To improve this situation, we are taking action.

Specifically, we propose that at least one of the three jury members should be a composer from a genre other than contemporary music. This will create opportunities for a fair evaluation of diverse musical genres.

【Addendum】

The Suntory Foundation for the Arts, which organizes the Akutagawa Composition Award, is a public interest incorporated foundation.

According to Article 2, Item 4 of the "Act on Authorization of Public Interest Incorporated Associations and Public Interest Incorporated Foundations" (Public Interest Corporation Law), "business for public interest purposes" is defined as follows (in this case, the "appended table" likely refers to "business aimed at promoting culture and the arts"):

"Business of the kind listed in each item of the appended table that relates to scholarship, art, charity, or other public interests, and that contributes to the promotion of interests for many and unspecified persons."

If the selection committee for the Akutagawa Composition Award becomes more diverse, a wider range of works could become eligible for the award. By contributing to the "promotion of interests for many and unspecified persons," the Suntory Foundation for the Arts would fit this definition of an appropriate organization.
