Scientists say that our country will only get hotter and we need to look at a law to protect Children and people in workplaces.

I have a 6 year old in school at the moment. I had a meeting this week inside the school. I was in an office opposite my child's class, the bi-fold doors were open, fans were on and yet the heat was unbearable. I watched the children sitting at their desks, heads down, sweating, irritable and unwilling to learn.

I watched as the teachers were overworked, looking after 30 unhappy hot and tired children. I asked how they were coping and they said its unbearable to work in the heat, without trying to get 30 exhausted children to do as they are told.

So I came home and did my research:

High temperatures and extreme heat can cause children to become sick very quickly in several ways. It can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. High heat can also contribute to irritability both for children and their caregivers.

Temperature has been shown to have a tremendous impact on student performance, and it all begins with altering our mood. Temperature's effect on mood decreases memory and cognitive ability which is what affects learning ability.

New research suggests that extreme heat contributes to gaps in educational achievement: both across as well as within countries. Temperature is a surprisingly disruptive factor for students — both for high stakes test-taking and for learning over the longer term, across a wide range of educational setting.
