Do not Dump Radioactive Contaminated Water into the Ocean!
Why this petition matters
We oppose the policy of the Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) to dump highly contaminated water of various radioactive materials accumulated at the wrecked Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant into the ocean.
On April 13, 2021, the Japanese government and TEPCO decided to dump approximately 1.3 million tons of radioactive contaminated water stored at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant site into the ocean. Violating the promise made to fishermen and ignoring the opposition of municipalities in Fukushima Prefecture, the Japanese government and TEPCO plan to start dumping the contaminated water into the ocean by around spring next year.
This contaminated water contains 860 trillion becquerels of tritium, which by nature could not be removed by the ALPS multi-nuclide removal system, as well as 60 other radionuclides that remained by failure in treatment. Tritium is a radioactive substance that accumulates in the body and causes internal radiation exposure, which is detrimental to health.
The Japanese government claims that the radioactive water will be duly treated and diluted so that it is safe and has no problem. We cannot tolerate such falsehoods. Contamination will surely be concentrated through the food chain. Health hazards in the vicinity of nuclear power plants that emit tritium have been reported worldwide.
The dumping of contaminated water into the ocean is an outrageous act. It is to evade the responsibility for the Fukushima nuclear accident and steer the country toward a policy of promoting nuclear power.
The Japanese government and TEPCO have stubbornly refused to take responsibility for those who have been deprived of their homes and for those children who have been suffering from health problems as evident and serious results of the nuclear accident. Furthermore, it is absolutely unacceptable to take active initiative in polluting the oceans, which also deprives fishermen of their livelihood.
The sea belongs to the people of the whole world.
It is the minimum duty for the Tokyo Electric Company to take step for land storage of the contaminated water, a product of its own accident, in order to prevent spread of contamination.
Also, Japanese government is planning to decide “nuclear sharing” of nuclear weapons with U.S. government.
It is against “Three Non-Nuclear Principles” which reflects the anti-nuclear aspiration of Japanese people who has serious experience of radioactive exposure by the A-bombs.
We strongly urge Japanese government and the Tokyo Electric Company to observe the following three points.
1. Stop immediately all works to dump the radioactive contaminated water into the sea!
2. Never restart the nuclear power plants!
3. Preserve the three non-nuclear principles of “non-possession, non-production, and non-introduction of nuclear weapons”, which is the policy of the Japanese government after the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki!
