Why this petition matters

We, the Undersigned, Citizens of the Republic of Kenya and Residents of Nairobi County PRAY that the National Assembly Considers this petition AND Initiates legislation that puts a standard price for basic commodities as follows:

Maize flour – KES 60
Milk – KES 40 (500 ml)
Bread – KES 45 (400 g)
Cooking Gas – KES 800 (6kg), KES 1200 (13kg)
Petrol – KES 90 (1 litre)
Diesel – KES 80 (1 litre)
Kerosene – KES 70 (1 litre)
Sugar – KES 70 (1 kg)

Sign this petition to demand for lower food prices on basic commodities.

Additionally we draw the attention of the House to the following:

1. Inflation in prices of food and basic commodities: THAT, the people of Kenya have become severely affected by the recent increase in the prices of food and basic commodities such as maize flour, wheat flour, cooking oil, cooking gas, milk, bread, sugar, petrol, diesel, kerosene and fertilizer. THAT, this increase in the prices of food and basic commodities threaten the people of Kenya with hunger and starvation; Food Insecurity. THAT, more than 35% of Kenyans suffer from food insecurity and malnutrition each year, with 2.6 million facing a food insecurity crisis. THAT, in February 2022, the Kenya Food Security Steering Group’s annual Short Rains Assessment reported that there are around 3.1 million food-insecure people in pastoral and marginal agricultural areas, a 48% increase since August 2021. THAT, Kenya ranks 86 out of 117 countries on the 2019 Global Hunger Index.
2. Inaccessibility of clean water and sanitation: THAT, the majority of the residents of Nairobi County are unable to access clean fresh water and proper sanitation. THAT, 15% of Kenyans rely on unimproved water sources, such as ponds, shallow wells and rivers, while 41% of Kenyans lack access to basic sanitation solutions. THAT, in Kenya, according to UNICEF, 9.9 million people drink directly from contaminated surface water sources and an estimated 5 million people practice open defecation. Only 25% have hand-washing facilities with soap and water at home.
3. Inaccessibility of sanitary pads: THAT, 65% of women and girls in Kenya are unable to afford and access sanitary pads.
4. Inaccessibility to arable land: THAT, many Kenyans are unable to access arable land, and that many Kenyans have been alienated from their land illegally. THAT, we have made the best efforts to have these matters addressed by the relevant authorities all of which have failed to give a satisfactory response.

THAT, none of these issues raised in this petition is pending in any court of law, Constitutional or any other legal body.

We also demand that:

1. The National Assembly provides and makes public a comprehensive status report on the supply and distribution of clean water by all water and sewerage companies throughout the country in conformity to the right of all Kenyans to clean water and sanitation as per Article 43 1(d) of the Constitution of Kenya (2010);

2. Provides and makes public a comprehensive status report on the Galana-Kulalu Irrigation Scheme, citing any contracts, deals and partnerships involving the scheme.

3. Initiates legislation that will provide a timeline and guideline for the implementation of Article 43 of the Constitution of Kenya (2010).

4. Initiates legislation that ensures the provision of free sanitary pads to all women and girls.

5. Provides and makes a comprehensive status report on the usage of public land.

6. Initiates processes that will ensure the full implementation of the Ndung’u Land Report and the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission Report.

7. Initiates processes that would reduce official travels by public servants.

And your PETITIONERS will ever Pray.
