In 2018, the Spanish Health Authority, AEMPS, released an advisory note stating that the painkiller, Nolotil (metamizole) should only be given on short term prescriptions following a detailed evaluation of a patient's background, including their ethnicity. 

If this advice is followed, the drug should never be given to Northern European patients, as it has been scientifically proven to provoke agranulocytosis (severely low white blood cell count) in this group. This often leads to dangerous illnesses such as sepsis, gangrene, organ failure and even death.

It is banned in nearly 40 countries worldwide, including America, Australia and Sweden. However, Northern European expats and tourists alike are continually dying after being given Nolotil. In December last year, 42-year-old Mark Brooks tragically became the 40th victim of metamizole after suffering a mild shoulder injury. But we believe many more could be affected.

Therefore, we are calling on health facilities in Spain to pledge that they will follow the 2018 informative note and not give Nolotil to Northern European - nor for that matter, American, Australian and New Zealand - patients.

En 2018, la Autoridad Sanitaria Española, AEMPS, publicó una nota consultiva en la que afirmaba que el analgésico, Nolotil (metamizol) solo debe administrarse en prescripciones a corto plazo tras una evaluación detallada de los antecedentes del paciente, incluida su etnia. 

Si se sigue este consejo, el fármaco nunca debe administrarse a pacientes del norte de Europa, ya que se ha demostrado científicamente que provoca agranulocitosis (recuento gravemente bajo de glóbulos blancos) en este grupo.
