Protect Coopers Plains' Dutch History
Protect Coopers Plains' Dutch History
Why this petition matters
The Dutch Houses in Coopers Plains, are social and cultural assets. They are part of Brisbane's post-war history. Of the original 300, there are fewer than 80 left (a mix of private and public homes). We, the Coopers Plains Local History Group and the Dutch Australia Cultural Centre, called for a Dutch House to be preserved for public access and posterity, to tell its story. Although we applied to have one of them heritage listed that is a very original example, it failed because the Dutch Houses are mid-1950s and therefor not old enough.
Therefore, our strategy now is to call on City Council to place an information plaque in front of both Dutch Houses (at 9 Macdevitt St and 4 McKoy Street - pictured) describing their unique place in Brisbane’s public housing and migrant history. This will be pursued by the Coopers Plains History Group at part of the 2024 Bicentenary of Queensland’s conception in the form of the Moreton Bay Penal Colony.
Note - if you can't find where to sign, you might have signed it already (it looked a bit different before because we were petitioning about 86 Troughton Rd, which has since been demolished). If so, please share it with a friend, neighbour, family or the general public.
