Why this petition matters

As an author who has spent countless hours researching and writing about Ripken, the Durham Bulls bat dog, I have come to appreciate the incredible dedication and hard work of these canine athletes. Their unique skills not only entertain fans but also contribute significantly to the game's atmosphere. However, their talents are currently confined to minor league baseball games.

Bat dogs have been a part of minor league baseball for decades. Teams like the Trenton Thunder and Greensboro Grasshoppers have long used dogs as bat boys, retrieving bats and balls during games. These dogs are more than just mascots; they're integral parts of their teams (source: ESPN).

Despite this longstanding tradition in minor leagues, Major League Baseball (MLB) has yet to welcome these canine athletes into their ranks. This is a missed opportunity for MLB not only in terms of fan engagement but also in promoting animal welfare awareness.

By incorporating bat dogs into MLB games, we can highlight the intelligence and trainability of these animals while encouraging responsible pet ownership. Furthermore, it could open up opportunities for rescue dogs who might otherwise be overlooked.

We believe that it's time for Major League Baseball to recognize the value that these hardworking bat dogs bring to our national pastime by allowing them onto their fields during games.

Please sign this petition if you agree that it's time for our beloved bat dogs to make their debut on major league fields! CALL THEM UP!
