Why this petition matters

Started by James McKay

Neighbours,

As many of you will now know, Stafford Developments Ltd. has taken over the development of 227 Gerrard St E., currently occupied by The Beer Store but soon to be the new home of The Georgian condos, which will include retail space at ground level.

While the original plans included a beer store - the developer has submitted amendments to the city that will see 2/3 of the new retail space leased by the beer store. A proposed suburban-sized beer store of 6,964 sq ft - coming to 227 Gerrard St. E. That's bigger than the Shoppers located on Parliament St.

There are several existing locations within a 10-minute walk where beer can be purchased:-

· Metro Grocery Store, 89 Gould St - 800 metres - 10-minute walk

· Loblaws Carlton & LCBO, 60 Carlton St - 900 meters - 10-minute walk

· The Beer Store, 534 Parliament St - 800 meters - 10-minute walk

· LCBO, 512 Parliament St A - 700 meters - 7-minute walk

Is there a need for a beer store of this size at this proposed location?

At a virtual public meeting with the developer, city staff and Councillor Wong-Tam, on February 8th, residents raised the following concerns:-

  • It's too big.
  • Large delivery and collection trucks will increase traffic and cause disruption to residents on Gerrard, Ontario & Seaton St. This is a primarily residential area.
  • Gerrard St. E. is not a Main St. vehicles will stop in the Gerrard St bike lanes and block our small one-way streets.
  • The proposed entrance is at the corner of Gerrard and Ontario - where visitors will illegally stop/park, causing severe access issues for residents, school buses and TTC Wheel-Trans.
  • Only six underground parking spaces will be available for a commercial operation of this size.
  • Each trailer (see picture) currently located at 227 Gerrard holds 20 pallets. Empty pickups are five times per week in the summer and three times per week in the Winter. With a substantially bigger store & smaller trucks (due to smaller loading bays & access), there will be heavy traffic on our one-way streets - with trucks coming in and out multiple times per day. Our one-way streets aren't suitable to handle this volume of traffic from large vehicles.
  • Crowds and lineup on local streets.

If you live locally, please help by signing this petition. We must send a clear message to the city, the developer and the beer store that this type of agreement is not in the best interest of our community.
