Why this petition matters

Started by Rachael Lewis

The more you learn about IVF/IUI treatment in England, the harder it is to understand. Especially when our rights to access it through the NHS are more complicated than you would expect compared to the rest of the UK.

Please watch this video I made which aims to explain the problem in more detail.

Right now, there's huge inequality with fertility treatments across the UK. It's a very expensive process in England and the criteria to access fertility treatments is inaccessible to so many communities. Currently in Northern Ireland, all women are eligible for one round of IVF on the NHS. In Wales, it’s two and in Scotland it’s three. But in England, many families are not eligible for IVF at all.

I’ve set this petition up to raise awareness of how the UK government has devolved healthcare in England to Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG’s), who ultimately decide who is eligible for IVF/IUI treatment. Each county has a CCG. Their rules differ across the country and it is honestly like the wild west out there.

For example, some CCG's can deem you as ineligible for treatment if:

  • You're in a heterosexual couple and already have children
  • You or your partner have a child from a previous relationship
  • You're a female over 35 years old
  • Your BMI is too high (BMI readings often don't count for muscle mass)

This is discrimination.

People in England deserve the same rights to fertility treatment as those in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

Here are the objectives of this petition:

  • Ensure that all CCG’s in England adhere to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) fertility guidelines
  • Bring England in line with the rest of the UK allowing at least one attempt for IVF/IUI treatment for ALL females
