UPDATE
January 2020

Following the initial publication of the “Stop Utensils” petition, the Plante administration announced that they would ban single-use plastic utensils in Montreal in 2020. Although we adhere to this initiative, we do not accept that only plastic utensils are concerned by this proposal.

The decomposition of biodegradable and compostable materials (bamboo, wood, palm, kraft, etc.) in our landfills generate contaminants that are over 20 times more polluting than CO2 (methane, leachate).

With the help of this public petition, we mean to directly and straightforwardly inform our elected officials on this reality so that the law that will be passed in 2020 banishes all types of disposable utensils. In addition to signing this petition, do not hesitate to leave us your opinion in the "comments" section (following step) so that we can communicate it to the Plante administration during future public consultations!

We also invite residents of other cities of the Quebec province to participate in this petition. Depending on the number, we will try to make your claims known to elected officials in your city.

This initiative is led by the non-profit organization La Vague, a group of cafes and restaurants committed to the environment.

Dear citizens,

On August 23, 2016, the City of Montreal adopted By-law 16-051 prohibiting the distribution of certain types of shopping bags in retail stores. Today, we want to go further and ask our politicians to act in favour of:

The banishment of disposable cutleries provided by Montreal-based restaurants when dealing with pick-up or delivery orders.

An average restaurant produces around 20,000 meals a year that will be consumed outside its walls. If each of these meals was delivered with:

  • a disposable fork (4g),
  • a disposable knife (4g) and
  • a disposable spoon (2g).

This represents around 200 kilograms of disposable waste generated per restaurant in a single year!

The solution found by the restaurant Pâtes Bol: make disposable cutleries optional, and apply a fee of $0.15/person/set requested. End result: 95% of customers choose not to use disposable utensils, and the restaurant managed to keep a similar volume of order and prove its values to numerous customers!

Each set of utensils costs about $ 0.10, a total cost of $ 2,000+/year for restaurant owners. Stop using disposable utensils also means taking care of the finances of our favorite restaurateurs!

Today, to promote this type of initiative, we intend to run it with every citizen, yourself included! Here is how to take part:

  • Let your politicians know that you support the action of the restaurateurs who commit to greener practices by completing this petition
  • Refuse utensils during your next pick-ups and deliveries!
  • Share your photos with #stoputensils on Instagram

Let's show our politicians that we won’t take half measures to support our restaurants and the planet!
