South Korea: Amend the constitution for the betterment of all animals.  End the dog meat trade in South Korea!

We need your help to urge South Korea to amend the constitution to align itself with the modern world in the way the law recognizes and protects animals.  Please sign this petition to provide a voice to the animals under the care of the Korean people and speak up for them and for all supporters of fundamental animal rights in Korea.  We are asking to amend the constitution for the betterment of all animals and end the dog meat trade immediately. Tell Korea the world is watching and waiting with bated breath for a change!

Dear South Korean Government,

The current Korean constitution regards dogs raised for food as different from those raised as companion animals. Dogs raised for meat do not benefit from the protection from cruel or inhumane treatment afforded under Korea's animal protection law. In the present legal system, 'meat dogs' are regarded as objects, mere property, with no right to food, water, light, or shelter or, indeed, to be protected from cruelty or abuse by humans. The law reflects the ludicrous view that these dogs are for slaughter anyway, so they should not be protected and that they are somehow different from companion dogs. This is, of course, complete and utter nonsense; there is no such difference between dogs raised for meat and dogs raised as pets. Many 'meat dogs in slaughterhouses resemble the revered Korean Jindo or Japanese Tosa, often containing pure breed lines. There is no specific 'breed' of 'meat dog.' There are no genetic or behavioral differences between your faithful companion and family guardian and the poor, suffering animal locked in an endless row of wire cages.

Even if these dogs were to be afforded protection under the current Korean animal protection law, how would South Korea aim to enforce it when there is such a thriving industry in the meat dog trade? We have a black hole in Korea's legislation in which these poor dogs are placed, born to suffer and die at the hands of money-making dog farmers. This black hole is being exploited by the often illegally operated dog meat farmers and butchers.

Therefore, affirmative action must be taken now to ensure the Constitution is amended to address this black hole in the law.

The Government would do well to take note of how some of the leading countries recognize animal welfare and rights and listen to the international condemnation of the dog meat trade within its borders.

The world is watching and waiting with bated breath for a change!
